Action Learning

 

What would be the value of solving organizational issues while developing essential competencies?  This is precisely the outcome of action learning.

One phrase that most people can remember hearing from a boss, peer, parent or anyone that was trying to impart advice is, “Trust me. I know from experience.” This is much more convincing than, “Trust me. I heard it at a conference.”

Experiences cement lessons in our minds because they impact us at emotional, physical and cognitive levels.  When experiences can be leveraged in learning and development, these experiences become the most lasting and effective developmental times in people’s careers.

Action learning is the practice of structuring learning events around real world application and experience.  Action learning teams are charged with solving a real issue while a learning coach observes throughout the process to remind them of their team and personal development goals.  The team ensures execution on the assigned issue while the coach ensures that the intended learning and development happens in the process.

Orbital RPM uses action learning to embed the competencies for development at any level of an organization.  Many of the action learning teams we assemble are cross-functional and represent different levels of the organization so that participants get a systems-level view of the decisions they make.
